TSW
I played a few hours of it last night, intermittent dc's because my modem was problematic as the night progressed. I'll list what I think about the game in no particular order (note that what follows is my personal opinion within that short span of 7 hours-according to Raptr and I'll try to be as unbiased as possible)! Will add more as I go along.
Character creation
It's a pretty basic character creation system. Nothing like the detailed (Aion wheee!) stuff that I tend to prefer. Choices are much better than that of WoW and War, much less detailed than Tera/Aion/FF14. I think it could be around the level of Rift creation with less colours and not much facial modification :) Possibly has about 8 face choices, but its not too bad tbh... I eventually found a face I liked and changed her eye colour (the colours are alot brighter than in the other games, very nice in cutscenes), jawline, etc. Only took me about half an hour plus (and 1 deleted toon) but I eventually did settle on one :P Character creation -- best part about mmos!
You also get to select what clothes your newbie toon will start with (cosmetic). The rest of the gear you can buy from the Clothing store.
I went with a black haired Templar female -- Templar because I love british accents and how the faction feels :)
Still cant decide on if I like my fist/elementalist build but it appealed to me most. Thanks to Leth for some starter help at skills and weps! I do want to dual wield pistols at some point tho :))
The skill wheel thingy can be an info overload when you first look at it lol. You gain points to unlock passives and skills -- higher tiers unlock once you've bought the lower tiers etc. Not too different from some other PC games out there.
Ambience, gameplay and overall gaming experience
Lovecraftian-inspired ftw. I like how dark and creepy it feels, and for once... a game that you have to pay a bit more attention to when someone is talking/giving you a quest... Something I'm really not used to anymore seeing that I'm just fresh from a bunch of games with quests that were simpler objective-wise. And ohhh boy the quests... I'm a huge sucker for creepy stories, and each quest you encounter - sidequests especially (for now anyway) - is like a peek into the lives of these people, what happened in their last hours? What did they see? What was that sound???? *shivers* Its like an elaborate puzzle game mmo!!!! :D
Seriously though, am loving the puzzles they throw at you... one of the early story quests was pretty damn interesting, you have to get from 1 point to the end without triggering the alarms which would in turn set off explosives (you die and have to start again) :) good fun lol.
The whole game is pretty atmospheric... I liked standing on the Pier, looking out at the sea with the dark, overcast sky and fog or what seems like tendrils of fog whipped about by the wind. Wrinkling your nose as if you could feel the cold wind carrying the stench of the undead -- then an earpiercing scream suddenly snaps you out of your meandering thoughts (TSW actually made me jump and go "shit what was that?!!!" a couple of times) and you notice some people killing a banshee like creature nearby. I'm suchhhh a chikin.
Zombies. In the 1st zone. HALP I hate zombies. I dont play zombie games ever because they freak the shit out of me (Plants vs Zombies dont count)... So when I started on the game proper (out of the starting/tutes/main city, they threw us in the midst of a crazy zombie situation with superspeed zombies that run at you =.= arent all zombies supposed to be slow-ish??? Luckily, we never run out of ammo in this game. I hope we dont get more zombies later :/ Or my friends will have to put up with lots of screams on vent lol.
You still need to use your Tab button in this game :) hahaha I'm soooo not used to that now coming from Tera.
Combat is usual -- face target, make sure its within range of whatever weapon youre using, proceed to smack/shoot/zap/bolt it.
Some quests arent exactly shared when in a group, so if someone finds an item and clicks on it, it doesnt update for everyone in the group -.- Most quests are easy to hand in tho, turning in via cellphone is really convenient :D UI design/quest display is pretty damn good, looks sleek and modernistic. You can browse on the ingame browser while playing! Quests are marked with arrow placement markers if you need to be at a certain place (the starting tute will help you with basic gameplay commands).
Animations
Dont really like the simplistic and repetitive combat animations, but its no big deal, you'll just get used to it as with any other game. Not the best movement out there. Havn't really paid attention to the idle animations/emotes yet, will note tonight. I liked how Rift toons had subtle idle animations, and TERA ones were pretty nice (minus human females because they look deranged. for real).
Overall impression -- pretty good! I guess this comes from having little to no expectations ^_^ I dont look forward to the combat as much as I do in TERA, its definitely not as pretty, and I've not been to a TSW dungeon yet but I'm pretty happy with it! *easily amused* It's pretty immersive at this point (ok 5-7 hours isnt much i know)... Very very different from the usual fantasy mmos that are my staple. No world pvp, no flashy animations (because i guess it just wouldnt fit in and western mmo companies dont do flashy :( ), no Elins QQ. But its just so... cool... the puzzles, the stories, the hunting for clues, the creeeeeeepy as hell shivers you get when the game leads you through this dark, morbidly fascinating world. I cant play this game alone.
Now to buy that cute tartan skirt I saw in the shop....
**One major con: the game is expensive and comes with some rather unnecessary bells and whistles. Also how does one tell what stage of progression the character is in? With no leveling system how exactly do you tell if youre ready for a particular dungeon??? >.> Gotta find out.
Love,
Your friendly neighbourhood gamingunicorn
Templar - Server Huldra (but it doesnt matter really, since its a very fluid server system. you can group across all servers, across all factions)
Also need to find a way to play both TERA and TSW at the same time lololol.
